A pump which removes gas molecules from an enclosed volume so that a partial vacuum is left behind is known as a vacuum pump. It was invented by Otto von Guericke in 1650. Pumps can be classified into three types according to the technology used. These three types are the Positive displacement pump, Momentum transfer pump and the Entrapment pump.
Momentum Transfer Pumps, which are also known as molecular pumps, use high speed jets of thick fluid or high speed rotating blades to propel the molecules in gaseous state out of the chamber. Entrapment pumps trap gases in a solid state. Positive displacement pumps are most efficient for vacuums that are low.
The kinetic pumps apply momentum to the gas so that mechanics of the moving parts of the machine make the gas transfer from the inlet area to the outlet area of the pump. When the moving part is in motion, the gas molecules are accelerated and moves towards the area where there is low pressure.
When this process is continuously repeated, the molecules are pushed out from the container. This is done to create vacuum. When the required vacuum level is reached at, the tank is isolated using a high vacuum valve. This dis-allows the gases between container and pump to exchange.
A large variety of vacuum pumps are combined with chambers or containers of different types and using different procedures resulting into a very wide range of vacuum pumps. A positive displacement pump can be used to create a partial vacuum by transferring gas molecules from the container to outlet. But this may not be the perfect kind of vacuum created. Other techniques can be used to achieve such a vacuum. The combination of chamber and procedure to create a vacuum will depend on what type of f vacuum needs to be created.
It is extremely difficult to achieve the perfect vacuum. Sometimes more than one pump type is used for a single operation. The combinations of pump types used depends upon the quality of vacuum desired. In spite of a lot of advancement pump technology has its limitations. Therefore the quality of the vacuum achieved is fairly crude. Quality can be improved by subjecting the container to a process of extreme drying. This should be done before vacuum pumping it.
Extremely high vacuums can be generated through custom built equipment made of stainless steel. A vacuum pump can be available in wide varieties and forms. The utility of such pumps is extremely high.

Leybold mechanical vacuum pumps are powerful, two-stage direct-drive workhorses, pumping 2.1, 3.4 or 6.9 cubic feet per minute (at 60 Hz operation) to clear out chambers and maintain vacuum with ease. They offer these standard features: fan-cooling, low noise operation, minimum vibration, built-in flap to minimize fluid backup into the chamber, Viton® fluoroelastomer seals, wide oil level tolerance, pressure drain facility, and constant oil lubrication with positive oil feed. Pumps are prepared and charged with either hydrocarbon or perfluoropolyether pump fluid such as Fomblin® or Krytox® fluid prior to shipment.

Please specify your choice of hydrocarbon or perfluoropolyether pump fluid. Pumps come standard charged with Fomblin®, Krytox® is available for additional charge. When intended for use with plasma etchers or in corrosive environments, we recommend ordering the pumps precharged with Fomblin® (or Krytox®) pump fluid.

Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum introduces the RUVAC WH Roots pump series, an innovative new product line that meets the increasingly demanding vacuum needs of the solar and process industries and other applications with stringent requirements of operating pressure, cycle times and system uptime, thus increasing customer benefit.
The new WH series includes the RUVAC WH 4400 and WH 7000 Roots pumps. They use a unique, hermetically sealed motor and integral liquid cooling technology to deliver the industry's smallest, most robust and most energy-efficient package, while also achieving new levels of vacuum performance including the possibility to start the pumps at atmospheric pressure with the optional by-pass-line.
By eliminating the metal 'can' traditionally used to isolate the motor from the vacuum line, and replacing it with an epoxy-encapsulated enclosure, the RUVAC WH can use a smaller and more-efficient motor that operates at a lower temperature. This approach also reduces energy consumption considerably, eliminates shaft seals and their potential for leaks and provides outstanding performance with corrosive and toxic gases and vapors. Moreover, the WH series sets new standards for compact design, taking up less space than any competing Roots unit.
Also contributing to the RUVAC WH’s compact footprint is integrated liquid cooling in the gear cover and motor housing, which reduces half the amount of heat radiated into the ambient area — offering additional savings in air conditioning and extending the life of the power train.
The new drive design and the advantage of having no shaft seals, offer unique robustness, compared to any traditional design. This new type of pump will set new standards in reliability, even in harsh applications.
The RUVAC WH line is designed and engineered especially for the increasingly demanding vacuum-system requirements of the solar energy industry, metallurgy and furnaces, industrial coating, research and development and space simulation applications. With an optional frequency converter, the WH7000 can operate up to 9.800 m³/h @ 70Hz, while the WH4400 can operate up to 7.040 m³/h @ 80Hz.

Only ultra-precision ceramic bearings are used. To balance rotor assemblies, we utilize a two-plane dynamic balancer which offers many advantages over a simple vibration analyzer. Unbalance in turbopump rotors can only be eliminated by mass correction in at least two planes perpendicular to the shaft axis. Our two plane dynamic balancer pinpoints the angle and mass of unbalance. Adjustments are carefully made until the balancer's microprocessor determines the assembly's residual unbalance is within tolerances.
